Tiny thank you gifts

The whole difficulty with a thank-you present is scale. Too small and it reads as an afterthought; too large and the person feels they now owe something back, which is the opposite of what a thank-you is for. Between three and fifteen dollars is where that problem disappears, and most of this page sits inside it. The other half of the job belongs to the card, and the presents that work best here are the ones that make a card survive: a token, a keyring, something that stays on a desk.

When the thank-you is going to several people at once, a shift, a class, a team, the counted boxes are what to buy, and the card in each one does the personal part. When it is going to one person for something specific, name the thing on the card and pick a present that runs out: a candle, a balm, a small boxed set. A present that ends leaves no obligation behind it, which is exactly the point.
