What to settle before you order

None of these takes five minutes, and every one of them is a reason people order twice.

Count the people first
Everything else follows from it. One person and a budget is a different shop from twenty-four people and the same budget, and the second one is answered by the pack count rather than by the price.

Divide before you decide
A twenty-dollar box of thirty is sixty-seven cents a person. A twenty-dollar boxed set is one present. Both are on the same shelf and they answer different questions.

Check the measurement
A stocking toe takes about two inches across. A party bag takes a fist. A padded envelope takes a quarter of an inch of clearance. The card prints the widest measurement where the data has one.

Ask whether it runs out
A balm ends and a resin frog does not. For somebody with a full shelf, the one that ends is the kinder present.

Look behind the lid
Anything that lights up has a coin cell in it. The compartment should need a tool or two separate movements to open, and that is worth testing the day it arrives.

Leave time for the bagging
Thirty pieces in one bag are not thirty presents until somebody has bagged them. The sets that arrive divided cost more for exactly that reason.

Where this comes from

Small parts for toys and children's products: business guidance · U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Children's products intended for use by children under three that present a choking, aspiration or ingestion hazard because of small parts are banned hazardous substances. A small part is any object that fits, without compressing and in any orientation, entirely into a test cylinder that approximates the size of the fully expanded throat of a child under three. A separate rule requires certain articles that are or contain small parts, balloons, small balls or marbles to be labeled warning against buying them for children under a stated age. Button cell and coin battery: business guidance · U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Reese's Law, enacted in 2022, sets federal requirements for consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries. A compartment holding a replaceable button cell or coin battery has to be secured so that it takes a tool, or at least two independent and simultaneous hand movements, to open. The batteries need child-resistant packaging, and warnings have to appear on the product packaging, on the product itself where that is practicable, and in the instructions. Read September 9, 2026.
Choking prevention · American Academy of Pediatrics (HealthyChildren.org). Most children who die from choking are under five, and two thirds of them are babies under a year old. The household objects the guidance names are coins, marbles, toys with small parts, small balls, pen and marker caps and small button-type batteries, and it asks parents to check under furniture and between cushions for them. Balloons are named as a risk up to the age of eight. Read September 9, 2026.
