This page is deliberately not the anniversary page. What sits here is the small present for a Tuesday, a first month, a trip home, a bad week: and the scale is the whole point of it. Jewelry leads, and the piece to choose is the one that can be worn without a decision: a fine chain, a small pendant, a bracelet that goes on and stays on. Sixteen inches sits at the base of the throat; eighteen sits below it, over a collar.

The other things that work at this size are the ones with an evening in them. A candle tin burns for six of them and then is gone, which is a better present than a jar that stands unlit on a shelf for a year. A boxed pair of balms travels in a bag. What does not work at this size is anything that tries to be a bigger present in miniature: a tiny version of a serious thing reads as a stand-in, and a small thing that is completely itself does not.
